Job Description

Head of Boarding (Live in) – to start September 2023

Full Time / Permanent

St. John’s School requires a Head of Boarding to lead our residential team and to liaise with our sister schools and agents around the world, to promote Boarding, whilst offering a caring, safe and positive environment for Boarders between 11 and 16 years.

We offer a competitive salary, Aviva Pension scheme and the provision of a 2 bedroom flat with beautiful sea views and its own private entrance.

We are an independent day and Boarding school, overlooking the sea, in the beautiful Regency town of Sidmouth, in East Devon, for boys and girls aged Nursery -16. We are a relatively small school that caters for around 160 local day students, combined with a 50 strong contingent of international Boarders from more than 10 countries around the globe.

The majority of our Boarders are EAL, Spanish speakers, arriving for a term from our sister schools across continental Europe, South and Central America. Although they aspire to become fluent in conversational English, most will take part in separate EAL classes at the same time as GCSE or mainstream English. It is possible that some Boarders will sit 2nd Language or even First Language Spanish GCSE.

Academic expectations in the school are high, but we also believe that our students’ ability to communicate successfully, to consider the needs of others and to show drive, empathy, leadership and initiative are all attributes that will help them achieve success as well as make a significant contribution to society in later life.

Our school land extends over many hectares and has its own stream, woodland, horticultural area, along with customary sports pitches, sports’ hall, an indoor / outdoor swimming pool and tennis courts. All these facilities lend themselves to outdoor education, creative writing, poetry, outside performances and links with drama and superb weekend play areas for Boarders. It makes a stimulating, learning environment, and a very special “home away from home”.

IES’s mission is to provide excellence in education within an international perspective. The

International Education Systems group (IES) promotes the development of young people who

will have the capacity to contribute proactively to the on-going work towards a better world.
